METEGHAN, NS:  - People across Canada love their heritage places, sites that tell the stories of their communities, their culture, and our country. When heritage buildings are at risk, a reality in towns and cities across the country, people want to step up to save them but don’t often know how to get started.  On the local level, groups are sometimes able to rally and save these structures. We, in Clare, are no exception. Our group, as do groups across the country, works with many partners, including the National Trust for Canada whose mission is to help communities save their built heritage.

Canada’s Next Great Save is an online competition on the National Trust for Canada’s website with the winner determined by popular vote.  People can start voting on January 20, 2023 and vote everyday until February 22, 2023.  On February 23, 2023, the winner of the Next Great Save and recipient of the single $50,000 prize will be announced.

Heritage places from coast to coast to coast had until December 16, 2022, to apply for the Next Great Save.  A national jury of conservation professionals has chosen finalists based on these applications. Today, the National Trust has announced the finalists and we are jubilant to announce that our community, our Vieille Maison, is among the ten chosen to compete.

We hope to be Canada’s Next Great Save!  With these funds, we can go a long way to getting some much-needed repairs completed on La Vieille Maison.

Heritage enthusiasts can follow the Next Great Save competition using #NextGreatSave on the National Trust’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. For more details and the official rules and regulations visit www.nationaltrustcanada.ca/nextgreatsave

The Société Vieille Maison Association is a registered non-profit dedicated to the conservation and future operation of La Vieille Maison. Dating to 1796, La Vieille Maison is regarded as the most well-preserved post-exile Acadian homestead in Canada. This same structure was in 1958 turned into a museum of early Acadian re-settlers, by the famed Boston dancer Adolphe Robicheau. For additional information visit http://lavieillemaison.ca/
